The Count of Monte Cristo
The Count of Monte Cristo (French: Le Comte de Monte-Cristo) is an adventure novel by Alexandre Dumas, père. It is often considered, along with The Three Musketeers, as Dumas’s most popular work. The writing of the work was completed in 1844. Like many of his novels, it is expanded from the plot outlines suggested by his collaborating ghostwriter Auguste Maquet. The story takes place in France, Italy, islands in the Mediterranean and the Levant during the historical events of 1815–1838 (from just before the Hundred Days through the reign of Louis-Philippe of France). The historical setting is a fundamental element of the book. It is primarily concerned with themes of justice, vengeance, mercy, and forgiveness, and is told in the style of an adventure story. An exciting adventure of intrigue peppered in with some true history portrayed by one of the masters of the realm of adventure. Chip from Tampa is a fantastic narrator who elevates the excitement of the story. Ana from portugal and a few others drive one to insanity with their horrible accents.

Loved the book and the story. Some readers did not know how to pronounce basic English words and were hard to understand. Very frustrating!

One of my all time favourite books. An archetypal story that resounds in all of us - as a good archetypal story should.

I was unable to understand the girl from Portugal. Someone needs to review the recordings prior to posting.

An excellent story of the time with moral issues dealt with in an appealing way. However, I agree with many other reviews concerning the quality of the narration. Some were extremely difficult to understand and some irritating in their pronunciation of some basic French (and English) words, e.g. Monsieur. One reader, who actually read quite well in other respects, did not appear to realise that M. Is the abbreviated form of Monsieur. My friends were amazed that I actually continued listening. However, I still felt that the quality of the writing made it worth persevering. Also, to balance it up a bit, there were some really excellent readers e.g. Alt. chapter 94.

Dumas was a creative story teller and I am sure the translator was very talented but Librivox does a great disservice by trashing great works with terrible readers. Please, Librivox, review your reader's work. If they aren't up to standard have those chapters read by somone else. I am grateful for the good readers. I hope to be able to suffer through to finish because the part I can understand is a great story.

A great story, but uneven recording really detracts. I couldn't understand one woman at all.

The book is great! The readers allowed to read-terrible. I'm not sure why some of the readers are accepted. Is there no quality control? If I read a book in a way that no one can understand a word I'm saying, then it would get posted? There is a woman who sounds Russian and another Chinese...can't understand them. If I hear them begin a chapter, I simply skip it. What a shame as its a really good book, and I missed a lot. Re-record please and please screen the readings.

I would have left more stars but I only listened to 19 mins which is equivalent to chapter 1 only! I deleted & re-instslled it x many times but the sane 1 chapter downloaded in my iphone 4 :( So disappointed!

A great story and very entertaining. I was disappointed with some of the choppiness of different narrators, but nothing that took away from the story!! A few of the chapters were stopped without finishing the reading...but still worth it!!

Great story. Some chapters were extremely difficult to understand due to accents. I only realized after the last chapter that there are alternate versions of some chapters. If you are having difficulty with a chapter check to see if that difficult chapter has an alternate in the chapter listings.

The book is well written and the story is compelling. It keeps you interested throughout and you identify with the main character. The author takes time to introduce each character in depth and the reader comes to understand the motivations for their actions. Good message at the end. Narrators with heavy accents made the chapters they read difficult if not impossible to understand. There should be some form of QA performed. I actually felt that if these readers continued I would have had to find a printed copy to complement the audio. Luckily most of the chapters were ok.

Loved the story. Very entertaining and exciting. But a good portion of the narrators are hard to understand. If you listen closely it's ok, but some just don't need to be reading an english story aloud.

Amazing book some bad narration though especially chapters 25 and 26 horrid pronunciation it's bad when monte cristo is called " mount crist " it is slightly irritating when you are immersed in the book and then it is ruined by such a narration they should atleast give the popular classics to decent narrators

A great story. Not quite 5 stars owing to some readers with heavy accents and a poor knowledge of English.

Amazing story, but some bad readers. About 15 different readers, too many. But still one of the best stories I've read.

It's a great book, but where from these readers.my grandmother can read better than them

I love the book but some of the readers have the WORSE accents and it is impossible to understand them! It is so infuriating! I really wish there was a rule about that! The readers with the thickest accents read the longest chapters and I cringe every time they start reading. I just started skipping those chapters because I would get a headache. But the book is great. The readers ruin it. I wish Chip from Tampa could have read the entire book.

I love this story! I have seen two movie versions of this classic, but listening to the book, in all of its dramatic detail, is very engaging and entertaining. 90% of the narrators are excellent.

Great book! Highly recommend.
July 15, 2012
Loving the story but I can't understand some of the chapters due to thick accents..I hope I can finish this book! Why would they have people with such thick accents doing this? Very frustrating!

It was a great listen but the Count is kind of a drama queen!!

Great book. Some chapters are too hard to understand because French Canadians who arent so good at English feel its their duty to read. But its not that many chapters considering there are 100+

Wonderful book! The readers vary in ability, but the story itself makes up for any distraction that comes from switching readers.

Loved the story. Couldn't understand the reader for chapter 6 and 7. Couldn't finish the book. I'll read it myself instead.

Great book! Please use people that speak English clearly. :(

The Count of Monte Cristo is a work of art and deserving of its placement as a classic piece of literature. As far as the readers are concerned, well, it is difficult to know what is being said for entire chapters. While I applaud bilingual speakers and realize that English is a difficult language, I wonder why in the world anyone with such a strong accent would volunteer to read a book in English for an English speaking audience. Several chapters are badly in need of being re-read.
January 24, 2012
Why have readers who's 1st language is NOT English? It made it very hard to understand. Otherwise an incredible story!!!!
January 14, 2012
Is the best!

I really loved this book, yes spots very boring. I finally finished it. I has some of life's greatest lessons too. Read it for yourself.

It's truly unfortunate that books like this one, with an amazing story, are turned into boring ones thanks to a bad reader. I agree, some chapters are unbearable and disappointing; however I loved a few readers like Chip from Tampa Florida, he should have read the whole book. I wish you could rate each chapter.
November 09, 2011
Loved it! Probably one of my favorite books. The readers were fine, so great so not so great, but I am grateful they took the time to read it for me :)

If one has not previously been exposed to the Count of Monte Cristo, I suggest you list at least the first ten characters introduced and then list any applicable relatives under those ten names.

Love book, people reading ranged from very good to almost unbearable .

The book was great

You musn't let just anyone read. I couldn't get past chapter five. I'm sure these are wonderful people but I'm unable to listen to them. Sharp nails on a blackboard would be more pleasing.
