Black Beauty is a fictional autobiographical memoir told by a horse, who recounts many tales, both of cruelty and kindness. The title page of the first edition states that it was “Translated from the Original Equine by Anna Sewell.” It was composed in the last years of her life, during which she was confined to her house as an invalid. After its publication in 1877, Sewell lived just long enough to see her first and only novel become an immediate bestseller, as well as it encouraging the better treatment of many cruelly-treated animals.Although initially intended for people who work with horses, it soon became a children’s classic. While outwardly teaching animal welfare, it also contains allegorical lessons about how to treat people with kindness, sympathy and respect. The story is narrated in the first person and each short chapter relates an incident in Black Beauty’s life, with Sewell’s detailed observations and extensive descriptions of horse behaviour lending the novel a good deal of verisimilitude.Summary adapted from Wikipedia by Cori Samuel, with help.

Such a wonderful classic book. A must read for averyone! The reader does an absolutly perfect job, with a soft, easy to understand voice. It suited the story perfectly and was a refreshing change from all of the other rubbish readers this site is filled with!

Such a beautiful and moving story, enforces good values like standing up for the oppressed and the treatment of animals. Read clearly, an enjoyable listen.

Wonderful story. Reminded me of when I read it when I was in junior high. I loved it then too, but it was not an audiobook. What a pleasure to be read to and a classic story too. Lovely.

I hate reading but it was nice to have a book read to me specially as it was so clear to hear and understand. Bad thing is when it says "end of chapter 1..." it takes you out of the zone you were in.

Beautiful calming voice that does the book and Beauty justice. I should think there is no other book that goes into the mind of a horse so well as this one did and showed both horses and humans for what we really are. Beauty is a as Beauty does.

I loved the book, the film and now the audiobook it was really well read (including the voices) and worth listening to! It sounds better with an English accent considering it's an English book. It would be better with mans voice because Black Beauty was a male horse. xx

I thought it was a good book. It would be better if a man was telling it because black beauty was a man. It would be better for the people to understand that black beauty is a man not a woman. She had a very nice voice and her voice was clear.

So sad ... Poor poor Black Beauty. Deserved so much more ... man can be cruel to those who give their all in return. Good lessons for Children ... Like when Bambi's Mom died. Tough life lessons.
