Jane Eyre
Jane Eyre is a gothic romance novel by Charlotte Brontë, published in London in 1847. It follows the willful and passionate orphan Jane through her neglected childhood, her education at a strict girls' school, her time as a governess, and her eventual romance with the troubled yet dashing Mr. Rochester.
The central themes of Jane Eyre are morality, religion, social class and gender relations, but mainly passion and independence. The book might seem tame or out of date to modern readers, but it certainly caused a sensation at the time of its publication, yet it's still highly relevant and readable today. Throughout the story Jane fights against the affections of all the men in her life until she is certain that a relationship will be on equal ground. And in Victorian England, a woman so headstrong and independent, with her own selfhood and passions at the center of the narrative, was seen as a brave departure from the typical portrayal.

I love this book! The first time I read it (many years ago), I found it very difficult--the length, the old and British English, getting lost in the details... But then I listened to an audio version read by a British actress, and I was hooked. So, if you find it difficult, listen to it or see the movie first. A classic English novel about a harsh childhood, leaving home, finding friends, and, finally, romantic love. Personal redemption and happiness come from knowing and accepting another for who they are (and not who they may appear to be) without making them the entirety of your world. I recommend the most recent movie version directed by Fukunaga. They stick most closely to the book (even though they mix the narrative sequence). Acting is supurb.

One of the greats and yes, its heroine is a must read for all those who persevere in life...because good things do happen to those who overcome "obstacles " in life. Jane did have drive or a focus to do what was right. Check th movie with Elizabeth Taylor as a young orphan Jane...

Well, just cause I'm a kid. I liked the beginning, when she as a kid. Towards the middle, i found the language dry. I also found her lover so interrogative and annoying. At the end, it was better than the middle. It took me about four months to complete this book. Just so ou know, dont be looking for a light read if you delve into the book. But what i did like was its complexity (everyone has many sides) and how everything ties together and symbolisms were clever.
