Jane Eyre

by Charlotte Brontë

282 ratings, 52 reviews

Jane Eyre is a gothic romance novel by Charlotte Brontë, published in London in 1847. It follows the willful and passionate orphan Jane through her neglected childhood, her education at a strict girls' school, her time as a governess, and her eventual romance with the troubled yet dashing Mr. Rochester.

The central themes of Jane Eyre are morality, religion, social class and gender relations, but mainly passion and independence. The book might seem tame or out of date to modern readers, but it certainly caused a sensation at the time of its publication, yet it's still highly relevant and readable today. Throughout the story Jane fights against the affections of all the men in her life until she is certain that a relationship will be on equal ground. And in Victorian England, a woman so headstrong and independent, with her own selfhood and passions at the center of the narrative, was seen as a brave departure from the typical portrayal.

My favorite book! I stumbled across this book quite by accident while browsing through a free book app. Once I started reading, I became so engrossed in the story that I'm sure I was reading it in a jaw dropped state. I couldn't believe this great read had been around for so many years and I never knew about it. When I spoke to others about the book, they would remark, "Oh, I read that in high school." For a while I was angry that it took me until my 40's to read and enjoy this book!!! :-) It truly is a great read!!!!

Indeed worth the time spent rereading great compositions. A refreshing tale to read nowadays. I ignored the book when I was young, and did not regret reading it now when the influence of modernization becomes unbearable.

Jane Eyre is my favorite book of all time, and my favorite literary heroine of all time, as well. I can easily identify with her being a teenage girl myself. She's smart, modest, moral, down to earth, a little insecure, and most importantly independent. Don't get me wrong, Jane's relationship with Mr. Rochester is the best part of the novel. He's definitely my favorite literary romance hero because he's dynamic, deeply flawed, yet redeemable. Mr Rochester is dark, rugged, charming, mysterious, highly intelligent, moody, deceptive, and he is madly in love with his little Jane. Likewise, Jane clearly loves him. I always feel a little saddened by the However, I'm glad that Jane is determined to be self-sufficient and have a life outside of her love interest, even if it means hurting them both to retain self-respect. It's so refreshing to read about a feminist heroine who is strong and independent, unlike the annoyingly whiny, weak, and talentless Bella Swan of Stephanie Meyer's Twilight Saga, who is completely willing to give up everything and anything for the sake of Edward Cullen. I highly recommend Jane Eyre to any teenage girl who is sick of reading poorly written and plotless YA romance novels with crappy female role models. Jane Eyre is a timeless coming of age novel that can impact any young teenage girl positively with Bronte's brilliant writing style, intelligent heroine, and strong life lessons on self-sufficiency and morality.

I have read this book three times, normally once is enough. It is THE most beautifully written book I have ever read. The second time I read it I highlighted every descriptive piece because I was in awe of the use of language. This book is enthralling, enchanting and heartwarming. A must read.

I love this book! The first time I read it (many years ago), I found it very difficult--the length, the old and British English, getting lost in the details... But then I listened to an audio version read by a British actress, and I was hooked. So, if you find it difficult, listen to it or see the movie first. A classic English novel about a harsh childhood, leaving home, finding friends, and, finally, romantic love. Personal redemption and happiness come from knowing and accepting another for who they are (and not who they may appear to be) without making them the entirety of your world. I recommend the most recent movie version directed by Fukunaga. They stick most closely to the book (even though they mix the narrative sequence). Acting is supurb.

One of the greats and yes, its heroine is a must read for all those who persevere in life...because good things do happen to those who overcome "obstacles " in life. Jane did have drive or a focus to do what was right. Check th movie with Elizabeth Taylor as a young orphan Jane...

Well, just cause I'm a kid. I liked the beginning, when she as a kid. Towards the middle, i found the language dry. I also found her lover so interrogative and annoying. At the end, it was better than the middle. It took me about four months to complete this book. Just so ou know, dont be looking for a light read if you delve into the book. But what i did like was its complexity (everyone has many sides) and how everything ties together and symbolisms were clever.
