"The Damned" (1914) is Algernon Blackwood's haunted house tale, and the haunting is a result of the rigid religious views of the house's former tenants. Blackwood delves into the idea that for each person the afterlife is whatever they believe it will be. For a widow of a religious zealot, one who has warped Christian ideas into a form of psychological torture, the afterlife is a place to mess with your poor wife. As you explore the torment felt by one women, you may be reminded just how many homes out there that are filled with unknown horrors… it will give you the creeps!
Blackwood creates a brilliant setting in the house, where said happenings have occurred, and his prose is well wrought. He builds the narrative, the sense of horror, but to be honest it does sort of fizzle out at the end. Blackwood does however warn his audience about the end. and again in the story to expect such an ending. It's a quick and enjoyable read. Not as horrifying as Lovecraft, but still a solid tale.
