A Princess of Mars
Before many of the current genres were cemented, Edgar Rice Burroughs began putting out a seemingly endless blur of sci-fi/fantasy/pulp fiction books, starting with A Princess of Mars. He would later become super famous for his Tarzan series, but the Martian books are still great reads.
It is a story set on the dying planet Mars, and its hero is John Carter, ex-Civil War vet - it's full of heroic, non-PC, early 20th century manliness.
Carter has been taken prisoner by the Green Men of Thark. And the titular princess in the story is Dejah Thoris, who leads a clan on Mars. The princess and Carter must free themselves in time to save the planet from destruction as its Atmosphere Factory begins to shut down. A Princess of Mars inspired many modern science fiction writers, including Ray Bradbury, John Norman and Arthur C. Clarke, and influenced the imagination of distinguished scientist Carl Sagan, who read the book as a child.

Burroughs was way ahead of his time. This book has everything you want in a fantasy book. Great read. Couldn't put it down. Way better than the movie as books usually are.

This is a wonderful book and contains the two essential ingredients sought by young male nerds everywhere: a brave but ordinary man, who gains superhuman powers (in this case strength and agility thanks to the Martian atmosphere), and a scantily clad, beautiful princess, who is hopelessly drawn to the noble hero. This is the stuff that comic books were made from, and no movie can capture the delight in reading this book.

I almost stopped reading in the first half of this book, but that was just laying the ground work for an exciting story of love, hatred, violence, revenge and friendship.

Just good, clean fun, great battles and characters. The idea that it is contemporaneous with "20,000 Leagues . . ." makes it more fascinating. Now we know how Jedi came to be.

A truly excellent representative of the genre. Like the finest of wines, it reads even better the second time around, and the intervening years only made the experience that much more wonderful. Great fun, at once evocative and compelling in its description of the people and the wonderful martian landscape.

It's almost as if the writer doesnt care about how the things in this book happen, just why. The lack of explanation for simple occurances is bothersome. Also, there's not much detail in this book regarding features and appearances, which is a two-edged sword. On one hand, you get to imagine what they look like, on the other, the lack of information leaves a blank page. The dialouge is classicly invariable. However, I love the sheer imagination of this author and I'm a stickler for science-fiction.

Great book. A classic full of action, and not too long. Younger readers might enjoy this book due to the fact that there is action, and that the book is sci-fi/fantasy. A good read and a perfect book!!!

Incredible read written by the first master of sic-fi fiction pulp novels! Follow the adventures of john Carter, Civil War vet, as he visits Mars for the first time. Full of action and suspense that will keep you turning pages and before you know it, you've finished the book! A highly pleasant read that you won't regret.

This is the first in the Mars/Barsoom series and I think it's the best and my favorite. A classic, fun, action adventure that I loved as a boy and I like it now as well. I see now that Walt Disney just released a movie - John Carter - about the book's main character. I look forward to seeing the movie.

Burroughs does not worry about reality just keeps the action flowing. it reminds me of the material used in comic strips when I was growing up in the fifties.Hollywood probably hopes fora new franchise with the fohcoming John Carter film.
