A Princess of Mars

110 ratings, 41 reviews

Part One of Edgar Rice Burroughs’s Mars-Series. Easy, swank, pulp read about an omnipotent gentleman teleported to Mars, finding an outlandish society of ape-, tree- and lizardmen, red-, white-, yellowmen, brains on legs, strange bastions and curious apparatuses, where the strongest survives and women are needy beauties to be saved. How can something be so platitudinous and at the same time so imaginative and enthralling? Boys’ book for sure.

First Burroughs book I ever read; having fun comparing story lines between book and Disney movie. The writer somehow magically transforms fantasy into a charming, alternate reality of sorts. Try it; you will either love it or hate it but you will not forget this book.

Before there was a movie, before I ever knew this book was so popular, I stumbled onto it. After listening to the first " princess of mars", and then continuing onto all the rest, I was astounded at much I loved the story. I needed to know how this love story unfolded between such far reaches. John Carter is an iconic man figure, with all the pride and charisma of a gentleman and dignitary who's courage would place him in high ranks anywhere. This book opened my mind to a whole new world of imagination. I must note that though this is, in truth, a love story, it's one that far surpasses the "chic flick" status. Any guy who chooses to enter this world will, without any doubt, become entranced with all it has to offer its reader. I tip my hat to E.R.B.

So far so good! It has me at the edge of my car seat while driving. Must agree that the one reader's voice is irritating and I have to blast it to understand what he is saying but I'll keep listening anyway.

Very good book. Excellent description of how Mars might've been. And a very good topic for the future of us maybe someday inhabiting it Again :-) Since we do have robots roaming the planet now .

This is actually my favorite story of all time, but some of the readers are insufferable. If you can stand their irritating voices, you'll love the pants off this book.

I can't believe this book is 100 years old! It could quite easily have been written today. Enjoyed it very much and am looking forward to the rest in the series. The Disney film (John Carter) did not do this book justice

SciFi at best conceived by someone so unfamiliar of our CURRENT knowledge of our nearest cousin planet! So very intriguing & timely even for the century plus historical information known at his tome of writing!!

This book could have been written today. I'm always amazed at what a great writer Burroughs is. He is like a Led Zepplin of writers. At the end of this book, I wanted more. Next please!
