Tarzan of the Apes
Tarzan of the Apes is Edgar Rice Burroughs' hugely popular 1914 book that spawned two dozen sequels. A child of a white couple who are killed by an ape in the jungles of Africa, Tarzan is raised by a she-ape as her own. Eventually Tarzan finds his parents' cabin and figures out why he's different from the apes from looking through their books, and eventually teaches himself to read. The adventure kicks into high gear when a band of African hunters move in and kill Tarzan's ape mother.
Tarzan of the Apes is the original and probably the best. "Tarzan Begins" could be a modern title. Get all the back story and watch Tarzan become the hunky, vine-swingin' jungle man who's inspired nearly a century's worth of kids to be just like the King of the Apes.

I started reading Burroughs at the age of eight, in 1958. I am now 64 and I still re-read him every now and then, enjoying every minute of it!

Mark H. This story puts all the Tarzan movies to shame. The way Burroughs describes the action you can almost see what he describes.

This book is extraordinary. I Read Alot, and i have never read a book where the imagery was so effortless, it was like watching a movie. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I got so excited i remember calling my sister when i found out it was his cousin who'd found him. Ive recently decided to go back to the original work of classic novels and so far i have not been dissapointed, the cookie cutter adaptations do little justice to the amazing work of these great authors. Cant wait to read the others in this series.

Fun book. Enjoyed it immensely. Different writing than modern writing, but once you get used to that, a good story is a good story.

One of my most favorite books of all time. I read this book in 7th grade and never forgot it. Tarzan is one of the coolest literary characters ever created. I can't believe that no movie director has ever made a film that does the book the justice it deserves! I highly recommend this book to all ages.

This is a great book for a 13-year-old reader, but adults may find the racism hard to take. This is exciting stuff if you can forgive the attitudes of a century ago. It's worth reading as background to all the awful movies and comics that butcher the story.
