Ethan Frome

by Edith Wharton

1 rating, 1 review

Edith Wharton’s 1911 novel Ethan Frome tells the story of a tragic love triangle. Set in the highly symbolic wintry landscape of Starkfield, Massachusetts, the narrative centers on the title character’s fraught relationships with his “sickly, cantankerous” wife Zeena and his young, beautiful cousin Mattie Silver.

Ethan Frome may seen so small that it's meaning is inconsequential. That is not the case. In 97 pages Edith Warton manages to challenge everything you thought you knew about romance and sorrow. Her characters reach out and grab you; do not expect to read this book and remain unchanged.
