Buck Hawk Detective is by an author better known for the Deadeye Dick series of Westerns. Edward L Wheeler was a busy and successful sensational novelist who published many dime novels, the predecessors of American pulp novels. This is not a sophisticated story, it's a kids' book for adults but it rattles along and it is an entertaining and undemanding old-fashioned read. The author lived in Philadephia and the book has the feel of that city in the Nineteenth Century. He has an ear for dialect which makes some of the clumsy dialogue entertaining and even convincing. I am glad I read this book although I cannot give it more than two stars.
