The War of the Worlds
H.G. Wells coined the term "Martian" for his super-influential 1898 sci-fi classic War of the Worlds, in which England is set upon by spooky "cylinders" from Mars. At first the aliens looked pretty weak, until they busted out their gangly black-smoke-shooting tripod fighting vehicles. This book has left its mark on fiction, science, and science fiction for more than a century.

It was an interesting look on the human character in time of crisis. I wonder if there is any political inference here. I love the imaginative description of the Martians...a bit different than Marvin the Martian from Warner Bros. Overall I really enjoyed it!

I liked how well the author gives you the feeling of suspense in the story. The only bad thing about it, in my opinion, is that it describes everything in too much depth. Otherwise, I'm a sixth grader who is reading a classic book and I'm hooked.

The story drew me in even though I knew how it went. Wells is spot on when it comes to creating a mood of suspense and dread. Because it takes place in an age of low technology, and because Wells manages to evoke mundaneness of the times, the appearance of the Martians is truly horrifying. This story can be comfortably read in two or three sessions. I recommend taking your time and indulging yourself in a journey of the imagination.
