History Audiobooks

This selection of audiobooks is like having the History Channel where ever you go: with classics like Herodotus' Histories, or a Short History of England by the lovable G.K. Chesterton. Or, for an extremely long history of England, there's Thomas Macaulay's History in 14 volumes. There's Jacob Abbot's histories of famous leaders, from Alexander the Great to Mary Queen of Scots. And then there's Gibbon’s Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, which set the standard for history writing. The History of Florence and of the Affairs of Italy is a fine, yet lesser-known, work by Machiavelli.

When you're tired of European history, there's the Expedition of the Donner Party by Eliza Donner, or What Prohibition Has Done to America, by Fabian Franklin. Plunkitt of Tammany Hall is full of corruption and graft, and Buccaneers and Pirates of Our Coasts is full of swashbuckling seamen. Check out the The Lancashire Witches, or Beesley's The Loss of the S.S. Titanic. The Narrative of the Life of Fredrick Douglass and Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe are powerful accounts of slavery in the US. Memoirs of Extraordinary Popular Delusions by Mackay is a timeless history of the folly of humankind.
