The Virginian

by Owen Wister (1860 – 1938)

Ostensibly a love story, the novel really revolves around a highly mythologized version of the Johnson County War in 1890’s Wyoming … The novel takes the side of the large ranchers, and depicts the lynchings as frontier justice, meted out by the protagonist, who is a member of a natural aristocracy among men.

The Virginian is masterpiece of western fiction. It captures the imagination and draws the reader into life in the Wyoming Territory during the latter half of the 1800's. The Viginian is a man of courage, honor, wisdom and wit. He is a cowboy who works hard and always tries to do right. In this tale of the western frontier, he battles horse thieves, plays pranks, deals with stubborn fools, and attempts to win the heart of an eastern school teacher. It is part adventure novel and part romance. A perfect combination!
