Of all the great African explorers, Richard Burton, John Speke, James Grant, David Livingstone and Henry Stanley my favourite is Samuel Baker, but this is not just because I am fortunate enough to live in his house in Devon, where he probably wrote this account of his adventures over four hard years of travels in search of the source of the Nile, but because he was a larger than life character. What a man, a Victorian Indiana Jones!
