Riders of the Purple Sage

by Zane Grey

46 ratings, 16 reviews

The year is 1871, and wealthy ranch owner Jane Withersteen is in trouble. She has incurred the displeasure of her Mormon church leaders by refusing to marry a church elder and by befriending Gentiles (non-Mormons). In rides Lassiter, the quintessential Western hero: mysterious, purposeful, a deadly gunslinger, but with an unexpected streak of gentleness. While Lassiter is assisting Jane at the ranch, her friend and rider Bern Venters is having an adventure of his own in the Utah canyonlands. Riders of the Purple Sage is a story of heroism, love, brave men and strong women, good dogs and fast horses. And who is that Masked Rider?

Excellent book. A mormon woman stands up to the evil in the town of very corrupt men including other church leaders.

Tough time with a tough woman going against an entire town that raised her. The heroine is an amazingly strong Mormon woman that fights against all that is wicked and wrong in the town and religion. Adventure, drama, and descriptive scenes that gives the reader a real image of this terrain surrounding this great read.

I loved this book. Zane Grey had introduced me to the literature of the American Westerns in my teens. Somehow I missed this one among all the paperbacks I read so many years ago. The reader did a marvelous job!

Was Grey antiMormon? Or did he just use their teachings to try to make a point? I really enjoyed his writing and plan to read many other books.

Slow to get into it , but loved it. Very well read, great story about absolute power absolutely corrupting. A classic story but setback in time w different expectations of women , church doctrine, greed, power and what justice amounts to in the face of that.

My husband and I enjoyed this book very much. It told us things about the settling of the West we'd never known before.

Some twang in the readers interpretation adds to the dramatic effect.
