Much has been written about artists, and there are, in almost every language, a large number of books on their lives and works; but one would look in vain for one on the amateurs. It is scarcely in the biographies of artists that the names of amateurs are mentioned in passing, as in a catalog, to indicate the works they have commissioned or possess.
