The Naulahka
by Rudyard Kipling
The Naulahka, A Story of West and East, written by Rudyard Kipling in collaboration with Wolcott Balestier, was serialised in the Century Magazine from November 1891 to July 1892. However, after two instalments and Wolcott’s sudden and untimely death from typhoid in Dresden on 5th December 1891, Kipling was left with the task of revising and supervising the first English and American book editions of 1892. Kipling's account of the princely state of 'Rhatore' must have drawn heavily on his recollections of his visit to Rajputana as a special correspondent for the Pioneer between November 1887 and February 1888, described in Letters of Marque.
